Although hemp and marijuana are both biologically classified as cannabis, there are a number of important differences between the two plants. In this article, we’ll explain what sets them apart, but we’ll also explain why one is legal while the other isn’t.
What you need to know
It’s a common misconception that hemp and marijuana are two different plants. In fact, they are two different names for cannabis, a flowering plant in the Cannabaceae family. While science doesn’t differentiate between hemp and marijuana, legislation does. Hemp is legal, whereas marijuana is not.
The main difference between the two plants is the tetrahydrocannabidiol content, or more commonly known as THC. THC is one of the many cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, and is responsible for the “high” associated with it.
What is hemp?
The term “hemp” is used to designate cannabis containing 0.2% or less THC. Because the THC level in hemp is so low, it’s unlikely to get you high, which makes hemp legal in the eyes of the law. Although hemp doesn’t produce a significant amount of THC, it is capable of producing cannabidiol in high concentrations. CBD is also a cannabinoid, but not an intoxicant, unlike THC, and has become very popular for its health benefits.
The different uses of hemp
Hemp seeds contain virtually no cannabinoids, which are found in higher concentrations in cannabis flowers, leaves and stalks.
Hemp stalks can be transformed into rope, paper, wax and textiles for furniture or clothing. Hemp seeds, meanwhile, can be turned into oil for shampoo, soap or body lotion. Hemp seeds are quite nutritious, being a complete protein that’s also rich in fiber. They also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fatty acids are important nutrients for heart and skin health. They can also be processed into food products such as hemp milk, hemp protein powder or hemp oil. And they can even be mixed into animal feed.
Hemp oil VS. CBD oil
Hemp oil is also known as hemp seed oil. It is made from cold-pressed hemp seeds. Hemp oil can be used as a cooking oil. Like any other healthy type of oil, it can be added to foods such as salads and ready meals….
Hemp seed oil is different from CBD oil. CBD oil is extracted from the flowers of the cannabis plant and then combined with a base oil such as coconut oil or olive oil. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid found in all cannabis plants. This means it can be derived from hemp or marijuana. It has become increasingly popular since hemp was legalized by the government, and research attributes many health and wellness benefits to it. CBD-based products are legal as long as they contain no more than 0.2% THC.
