The different CBD potencies
When you compare different CBD products, you’ll discover that they can have potencies ranging from 300 mg to 4000 mg per bottle. The labels are confusing and often make no sense at all.
In fact, CBD oil strength is the amount of active compound in the blend. CBD oil producers generally define CBD concentration in percentages or milligrams. When purchasing CBD oil from CBD Alchemy, you’ll need to choose your desired concentration, which will be marked in milligrams and percentage. For example, for 10 ml bottles of CBD, MCT 25% oil has a CBD concentration of 2500 mg. Or MCT 40% CBD oil contains 4000 mg CBD.
Calculating CBD concentration
Let’s say you’re looking at two bottles of CBD oil. One is a 10 ml bottle which contains 1000 mg CBD as indicated on the label, and the other is a 20 ml bottle which is also indicated as 1000 mg. While both bottles contain the same overall amount of cannabinoids (1000 mg), the bottles have two different dosages. In percentage terms, the 10 ml bottle of CBD oil contains 10% CBD and the 20 ml bottle contains 5% CBD, meaning it will contain half the amount of CBD per drop.
Understanding the strength per drop is useful because it’s how you’ll measure your dose:
- A 10 ml bottle is equivalent to 200 drops, so to calculate the mg per drop, you divide the total mg of CBD by the number of drops.
- 1000 mg / 200 drops (10 ml) = 5 mg of CBD per drop.
- For the 20 ml bottle, you have 400 drops, which means that each drop is equivalent to 2.5 mg of CBD (the same amount of CBD has been diluted in a larger volume of carrier oil, so each drop contains less).
- The 10 ml bottle is twice as potent, so you’d need to double the number of drops in the 20 ml product to get the same dose.
How do you know what’s good value for money?
When comparing product prices, you essentially want to know the price you’re paying for each milligram of CBD, not the price per overall quantity of liquid. You should always follow a simple calculation when comparing different CBD products to get an accurate reflection of what you’re paying. To get the “price per milligram of CBD”, simply divide the price by the quantity of mg of CBD.
Some bottles may seem more expensive to buy, but because the potency is higher, you get more CBD per drop and therefore higher efficacy, so you can use fewer drops of CBD oil for the same effect. With other bottles you’re actually paying double the price, even if it seems the opposite at first glance.
Calculating the strength of a bottle of CBD oil can be confusing. We recommend that you judge CBD strength in mg, not percentages. Because when you buy CBD, you’re buying the amount of mg in a bottle. The difference with the percentage is that you can have two 500 mg bottles, for example, one of 30 ml and one of 10 ml, the amount of CBD in 10 ml is the same as in 30 ml but the 10 ml has a percentage 3 times higher. Yet you’re still only buying 500 mg.
Things to remember
Always read the ingredients label on CBD drops to check how CBD is listed. Sometimes the % or mg of CBD listed in a product is not the pure amount of CBD – it may refer to what’s called a “CBD ingredient” which itself could be a blend of CBD with another carrier, i.e. a diluted concentration of CBD.
