CBD, or cannabidiol, is gaining popularity throughout Europe as a health supplement. This cannabis molecule is a non-psychoactive cousin of THC, the cannabinoid that gets you high.
While CBD and THC are both present in cannabis, CBD does not have the same intoxicating effects as THC does. However, CBD appears to have some intriguing applications for improving overall wellness. Studies suggest that CBD helps ease anxiety and pain, soothe skin conditions, aids quality sleep, and more.
CBD comes from hemp, a variety of cannabis that contains less than 0.2% THC. CBD, along with terpenes and other cannabinoids, is extracted from whole hemp. It is then added to a carrier oil to improve bioavailability (typically MCT oil or hemp seed oil) and bottled.
You may be wondering how to use hemp oil? Well, first let’s clarify something. Hemp oil is not the same as CBD oil. Even though hemp oil also comes from hemp, it is made by compressing hemp seeds, which do not contain cannabinoids.
Is hemp oil without CBD effective? Not really. Hemp oil can be used in cooking and as a moisturizer. Because of its high omega-3 fatty acid and nutrient content, hemp seed oil is frequently referred to as a superfood. But because hemp seed oil lacks cannabinoids, it will not provide you with the benefits of CBD unless it is formulated with CBD.
How to Take CBD Oil
CBD oil, however, has been shown through anecdotal evidence as well as in clinical studies to help people in a variety of ways through its interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The endocannabinoid system’s job is to maintain homeostasis in the body.
One biologist who dedicated his career to studying the ECS was Dr. Robert Melamede. He described the endocannabinoid system as a “taskmaster that is constantly multitasking, adjusting, and readjusting the complex network of molecular thermostats that control our physiological tempo.” *
What is the sublingual method?
The fastest-acting, most effective way to take CBD oil is with the sublingual method. Sublingual means “under the tongue.” If you’ve ever checked out what the underneath of your tongue looks like in a mirror, this method will make sense to you. There is a vast network of blood vessels located there.
Administer a dose of CBD oil below your tongue and hold it there for 30 seconds or so before you wash it down with water or another drink. When you do this, the CBD is absorbed directly into the bloodstream through those blood vessels. The CBD that doesn’t enter through the limited sublingual surface will be swallowed and absorbed orally.
Using the sublingual method means that most of the CBD does not have to take the time to travel through your digestive system before taking effect. You should feel the effects of sublingual CBD in approximately 15 minutes. Swallowed CBD will take effect in 45 to 120 minutes.
Can you add CBD oil to food and drinks?
Yes! This is another simple way to take CBD oil– simply stir it into your favorite beverage or add it right on top of your food. Because boiling affects the cannabinoids, you should add CBD after you’ve finished cooking. And if you add it to tea or another hot beverage, make sure to let it cool a bit first so the cannabinoids are not boiled.
Keep in mind though that if you eat or drink your CBD rather than putting it under the tongue, it will take longer to take effect since it will need to travel through your digestive system before it enters your bloodstream. You will need to wait an hour or more to feel its effects. This is the case with CBD edibles or capsules as well.
How Much CBD Oil
How much CBD oil should you take? It depends on a lot of factors, including:
- Your previous experience with CBD/cannabis
- Your desired effects with CBD
- The current level / severity of your condition
It is important to find your correct dose of CBD. Read on to learn how!
What do the numbers mean on CBD oil?
Before you start taking your CBD, you should carefully read the label and get to know your product. Your CBD oil’s label should show two different values:
- The number of milligrams (mg) tells you how much CBD the entire bottle or package contains.
- The number of milliliters (ml) or ounces (oz) in a liquid suspension (tincture) tells you the total amount of liquid (typically MCT oil) in the tincture in which the CBD is contained.
Different CBD formulations have a different concentration of CBD/ml. To figure out the concentration of your CBD, divide the number of milligrams (mg) by the number of milliliters (ml).
For example, the CBD Alchemy oil with the highest concentration has 4,000 mg of CBD/bottle, suspended in 10 ml of MCT oil. So to figure out the concentration, divide 4,000 ÷ 10 = 400 mg/ml. So each milliliter of this tincture contains 400 mg of CBD.
Depending on the concentration of your CBD oil, the amount of CBD per drop will vary. CBD Alchemy’s bottles are clearly labeled with how many mg of CBD are in each drop. Our highest concentration oil contains 13,33 mg of CBD per drop.
How to find your dose
How much CBD oil should you take? You get to decide. In order to pinpoint your dose, start out low, go slow, and take note of the results.
Once you find out how much CBD is in one drop of your tincture, you are ready to go. If it is your first time, you should start with a lower concentration of CBD– perhaps 5 ml/drop or less.
An online CBD dosage calculator can be a practical aid to help you choose the right dose for you or your pet. Although, as always, our advice is to consult your doctor before making any choice.
